How long is the commute from Thornton to downtown Denver in 2026?

On the N Line, it is 19 to 29 minutes from a Thornton-area station to Denver Union Station, depending on which station you board, and trains run every 30 minutes all day on weekdays. Those times come from the RTD N Line southbound schedule in effect September 27, 2026 through January 2, 2027. Here is the scheduled ride to Union Station from each stop that serves Thornton:

  • Eastlake & 124th (12500 Claude Ct, Thornton): 29 minutes.

  • Northglenn & 112th (11355 York St, in neighboring Northglenn): 26 minutes.

  • Thornton Crossroads & 104th (10375 Colorado Blvd, Thornton): 23 minutes.

  • Original Thornton & 88th (8989 Welby Rd, Thornton): 19 minutes.

On the Monday through Thursday schedule, the first southbound train leaves Eastlake at 4:43 AM and the last leaves at 10:13 PM. Heading home, the last Monday through Thursday northbound train leaves Union Station at 10:56 PM and reaches Eastlake 30 minutes later. Friday, Saturday and Sunday run on their own timetables, so check the day you actually ride.

The catch is frequency. A train every 30 minutes means a missed train costs you half an hour, and the drive or walk to the station sits on top of the ride. Measure the trip door to door, from the actual home to the actual office, before you count on the rail time.

Sources and as-of dates: RTD N Line, A Line, Route 120 and Flatiron Flyer (FF1) schedules effective September 27, 2026 through January 2, 2027, including the fares and parking printed on them; CDOT I-25 North Express Lanes toll schedule for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027; E-470 toll rates page; Redfin Thornton data for the three months ending September 2026. All checked October 31, 2026.

What this guide does not cover: live traffic or crash delays, parking fees at Union Station or downtown garages, employer transit benefits, Northwest Parkway tolls, or which Thornton neighborhood to buy in. Drive times change by the hour, so test your own route at your real commute time.

What does the N Line cost, and where do you park?

A weekday round trip costs $5.50 on two 3-Hour Passes or one Day Pass, and an $88 Monthly Pass beats that once you ride 17 or more days a month. The standard fares printed on the current RTD N Line schedule are:

  • 3-Hour Pass: $2.75.

  • Day Pass: $5.50.

  • Airport Day Pass: $10.00.

  • Monthly Pass: $88.00.

The math for a five-day commuter: 20 workdays x $5.50 = $110 a month on Day Passes, so the Monthly Pass saves about $22. At 16 days, Day Passes cost $88, the same as the pass, so 17 or more days is where the Monthly Pass pulls ahead.

Each Thornton-area station has a park-n-Ride lot, and the schedule lists its size:

  • Thornton Crossroads & 104th: 880 spaces, the largest lot on the line.

  • Original Thornton & 88th: 550 spaces.

  • Eastlake & 124th: 410 spaces.

  • Northglenn & 112th: 310 spaces.

If you plan to drive to the train, a bigger lot gives you more margin on a busy morning. If you plan to walk, look at homes within an easy walk of a station and time that walk before you write an offer.

What do the I-25 Express Lanes cost from Thornton?

At peak, about $6.50 southbound in the morning and $7.40 northbound in the evening with an ExpressToll pass, or roughly $13.90 a day and $278 over a 20-workday month. Those numbers add the two Thornton segments on the CDOT I-25 North Express Lanes toll schedule for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027:

  • Segment 3, E-470/Northwest Parkway to 120th Ave: $3.10 southbound from 7:15 to 8:45 AM, and $3.10 northbound from 3:30 to 6:00 PM.

  • Segment 2, 120th Ave to US 36: $3.40 southbound from 5:00 to 8:15 AM, and $4.30 northbound from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.

  • Off-peak: $1.50 to $1.60 per segment most of the day.

Here is the arithmetic for a driver who starts near E-470 and uses both segments at peak:

  • Morning: $3.10 + $3.40 = $6.50.

  • Evening: $4.30 + $3.10 = $7.40.

  • Daily: $13.90. Monthly at 20 workdays: about $278.

Without a transponder, the License Plate Toll rates for the same peak windows add up to $31.15 a day, or about $623 a month. If you enter at 120th Ave and only use Segment 2, the peak ExpressToll cost drops to $3.40 + $4.30 = $7.70 a day, about $154 a month. HOV 3+ rides free with a switchable HOV transponder, and the lanes are optional: the general lanes have no toll.

How do you get from Thornton to Denver International Airport?

By train, it is about 66 minutes of scheduled ride time plus a transfer: the N Line to Union Station, then the A Line to the airport, all on one $10 Airport Day Pass. The RTD A Line schedule shows 37 minutes from Union Station to Denver Airport Station, with trains every 15 minutes on weekday mornings from 6:00 AM. Add the 29-minute N Line ride from Eastlake and the wait between trains.

By car, the toll-road option is E-470 to Pena Boulevard. The E-470 toll rates page lists each mainline toll plaza at $2.60 to $2.90 with ExpressToll, or $4.20 to $4.60 by license plate, and toll ramps at $1.25 or $2.05. Your total depends on how many plazas and ramps your route crosses, so run your exact trip through the E-470 toll calculator before you budget it.

How do you get from Thornton to Boulder without a car?

Take RTD Route 120 west to US 36 & Broomfield Station, about 30 minutes from Eastlake, then the Flatiron Flyer to Boulder, about 29 minutes more. The Route 120 westbound schedule shows a 5:55 AM bus leaving Eastlake-124th and reaching US 36 & Broomfield Station at 6:25 AM. On the Flatiron Flyer FF1 schedule, a bus that leaves US 36 & Broomfield at 6:17 AM reaches Downtown Boulder Station at 6:46 AM.

That is close to an hour of ride time plus a transfer, so time it against the drive before you commit to a Boulder commute from Thornton. If Boulder is your daily destination, compare that trip with the drive from Broomfield in our Broomfield commute guide and from Westminster in our Westminster commute guide.

Which Thornton commute setup fits you?

Match the home to the commute you will actually make four or five days a week, then price the commute into your monthly budget next to the mortgage.

Choose a home near an N Line station if:

  • You work downtown or near Union Station and can live with a train every 30 minutes.

  • An $88 Monthly Pass looks better to you than up to $278 a month in peak tolls.

Choose a home near I-25 and 120th Ave if:

  • You drive south at peak and want the shorter, cheaper Segment 2 toll, about $7.70 a day.

  • You split time between downtown and the US 36 corridor.

Choose a home near E-470 if:

  • You fly often or work near the airport and want the toll road option.

  • You head north on I-25 more often than south toward Denver.

Choose to test the commute before you offer if:

  • Your start time falls inside a peak toll window.

  • The nearest station lot is one of the smaller ones, such as Northglenn & 112th with 310 spaces.

"Thornton buyers often pick the house first and the commute second. I tell them to drive or ride the route at their real start time before we write an offer, because a train every 30 minutes or a $7.40 evening toll shows up every single workday." Nick Ahrens, North Denver relocation specialist with eXp Realty.
